About This Item
14-day material test to determine the cyclic effects of runway deicing compounds on cadmium plated parts.
Some runway and taxiway deicing/anti-icing compounds have been found to cause severe corrosion on aircraft components with cadmium plating. There is a need for users to understand the effect of these compounds on aircraft components when they are exposed repeatedly in a normal winter operating environment. The existing test in the SAE AMS1431 and 1435 specifications for runway deicers is a one-time 24 hour immersion test for cadmium corrosion, which does not accurately reflect how airplanes and airport equipment are affected by runway deicers. This new AIR document with the 14-day cyclic test is intended to provide better information to the end user/purchaser of the deicing compound regarding the cyclic effects on cadmium plated airplane parts or airport equipment. The document is intended to be referred to by the AMS1431 and 1435 specifications, which will then provide more useful information to the end user in the test report.
