About This Item
Chemical Fate and Impact of Oxygenates in Groundwater: Solubility of BTEX from Gasoline - Oxygenate Mixtures Oxygenated hydrocarbon compounds may be added to gasoline mixtures to improve emission quality and octane ratings or to conserve petroleum resources, which may alter the behavi or of dissolved organic compounds in groundwater following a fuel spill. This study evaluates the effects of oxygenate additives such as methanol or methyl tertiary - butyl ether on the aqueous solubility of dissolved aromat ic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and the isomers of xylene, collectively referred to as BTEX) from gasoline. It also explores th e nature of the dissolved contami t plumes that could develop from a sp ill of gasoline containing methanol
