Field Evaluation of Biological and Non - Biological Treatment Technologies to Remove MTBE/Oxygenates from Petroleum Product Terminal Wastewaters A pilot/demonstration study wa s conducted on three treatment technologies — the fluidized bed biolog ical reactor proces s, the activated sludge process incorporated with iron flocculation, and the ultraviolet light/ hydrogen peroxide process — to evaluat e their effectiveness in the treatment of petroleum marketing terminal wastew ater contaminated with methyl tert - butyl ether (MTBE). Contam inated groundwater was the primary constituent of the wastewater, which also contai ned benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX). All three technologie s were able to re move at least 95 % of the MTBE and BTEX in th e feed waters
