About This Item

This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) discusses characteristics of data communications for the Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems (JAUS). This document provides guidance on the aspects of transport media, unmanned systems and the characteristics of JAUS itself that are relevant to the definition of a JAUS transport specification. The use of unmanned systems is a key component in a strategy to reduce exposing personnel to hazardous situations and harmful environments. Unmanned systems can also provide cost-effective solutions to the performance of repetitive tasks. As a result, a large number of unmanned system products are being introduced to the market. Many of these systems are characterized as task specific and non-interoperable. An open standard for unmanned systems is required to support the rapid and cost-effective development and maintenance of unmanned systems. The Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems (JAUS) defines a suite of standards for use in the research, development, design, acquisition and deployment of unmanned systems. Information Reports (such as this document) discuss aspects of JAUS and the environments in which JAUS operates; these reports should be viewed as guidance to those who would wish to understand the derivation of current standards and/or to extend the JAUS standards into new areas. This document, the JAUS Transport Considerations report, discusses the concerns and characteristics that are important in the design of transport standards for JAUS messages between JAUS-compliant entities. This document provides reference and background information pertaining to the design of such transports. This document should be considered an adjunct to the JAUS Transport Specification standard. This is a living document. Subsequent revisions of this document will identify and discuss transport needs uncovered in the definition of additional specific transports.
