About This Item

This SAE Recommended Practice provides test procedures, performance requirements, and guidelines for cargo lamps intended for use on vehicles under 5443 kg (12000 pounds) Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Section 1: Added meaning of GVWR for clarity. Modified reference section to match latest format of J-documents. Previous 3.1 REAR-FACING CARGO LAMP is now 3.3 REAR-FACING CARGO LAMP with a modified definition updated to align with other J-documents. Removed weight reference from definition of cargo function as it is implied in the scope of the standard. Previous 3.2 SIDE-FACING CARGO LAMP renamed IN-BOX CARGO LAMP. Definition updated to remove the requirement that it is facing toward the centerline of the vehicle and to align with other J-documents. Some vehicles have cargo lamps that are not rear-facing or side-facing; by removing the requirement of facing toward the centerline of the vehicle, these cargo lamps that are mounted in the box are included in this document. Modified 3.2 : Moved side facing cargo lamp to 3.3, in-box cargo lamp. Modified 4.2: Side-facing cargo lamp renamed in-box cargo lamp. Section 4: Reordered alphabetically to match Section 3. Added 5.1.5.2 to reference J1889. Modified content of 5.2 to align with other J-documents. Modified 6.1.5.2: Side-facing replaced with in-box cargo lamp. Edited footnote 3 of Figure 1 and Figure 2 to clarify maximum intensity requirement. Figure 2: Side-facing replaced with in-box cargo lamp. 7.1.1.1 reworded for clarity of intended guidance. 7.1.1.2 changed “shall” to “may.” This section is under design guidelines and is not a requirement. 7.1.1.3 removed reference to white light in the design guidelines. This is a requirement covered by 5.2. Added Figure 3 to clarify rear facing and in-box mounting. Eliminated Appendix A to make J1424 more technology-independent.
