About This Item

This SAE Standard covers the minimum requirements for design, construction, and testing of devices to prevent the propagation of backfire flame from within the gasoline engine to the surrounding atmosphere. The potential exists for failures of some arrestors on high volume intake assemblies. Those with higher volume than the 75 in3 test fixture can develop higher pressures, and arrestors that pass the fixture test have been shown to fail when tested on the actual induction assembly. Committee modified the requirements in 5.4.5.2.1 to require testing on a representative induction assembly when its volume is greater than 75 in3. The committee also reworded the definition of induction system was needed for what constitutes induction assembly.
