About This Item

SAE J1939-81 Network Management defines the processes and messages associated with managing the source addresses of applications communicating on an SAE J1939 network. Network management is concerned with the management of source addresses and the association of those addresses with an actual function and with the detection and reporting of network related errors. Due to the nature of management of source addresses, network management also specifies initialization processes, requirements for reaction to brief power outages and minimum requirements for ECUs on the network. Figure 2 was added to clarify and give examples for NAME fields of the Address Claim message. Text was moved from the Unique Addresses section to the Preferred Addresses section to clarify the standard’s intent for this feature. 4.2.2.1 A section on Address Imposters was added to assist users in implementing functional safety features. 4.2.2.5 Required behaviors have been clarified for standard CAs. 4.4.1 Clarifying text was added in the Address Claim Prioritization section. 4.5.1 When a contention of an address is detected, specific required behaviors were added. 4.5.3.4
