This SAE Standard covers both quality assurance and installation requirements for fasteners. This document establishes engineering criteria and guidance for quality assurance requirements (including Test and Inspection) for procurement of threaded fasteners where such criteria and guidance is not otherwise provided by existing fastener standards or specifications. The document also provides requirements and test procedures for self-locking fasteners including those manufactured by the installing activity. This document also provides requirements for the selection and use of fastener lubricants, additional corrosion protection treatments, fastener tightening procedures, and the use of thread-locking compounds. Revision A changes the sampling requirements and procedures for test of user manufactured self-locking externally threaded fasteners. Revised Tables 3A and 3B including correction of clamp load torque values. AMS 2518, AS 5272, IFI-524 and Commercial Item Description A-A-59004 thread lubricating compounds are added. Added requirement for plating removal before hardness testing. ASME B16.5 and ASTM F 704 are added as references for information on determining bolting lengths for flanged joints. Safety precautions are added regarding the use of polysulfide sealants for corrosion protection. The reference to MIL-S-81733 sealing compound is deleted. Added jam nut torquing guidance.
