The gear lubricants covered by this standard exceed American Petroleum Institute (API) Service Classification API GL-5 and are intended for automotive units with the primary drive hypoid gears, operating under conditions of high-speed/shock load and low-speed/high-torque. These lubricants may be appropriate for other gear applications where the position of the shafts relative to each other and the type of gear flank contact involve a large percentage of sliding contact. Such applications typically require extreme pressure (EP) additives to prevent the adhesion and subsequent tearing away of material from the loaded gear flanks. These lubricants are not appropriate for the lubrication of worm gears. The information contained within is intended for the demonstration of compliance with the requirements of this standard and for listing on the Qualified Products List (QPL) administered by the Lubricant Review Institute (LRI). In 1998, SAE J2360 was created when the U.S. Army transitioned the MIL-L-2105 to a SAE Surface Vehicle Standard. The Performance Review Institute (PRI) was selected to administer the approval process. This process is defined per PRI document PD4000. Over the past 25 years, various technical requirements have been included in the PD4000 document. The rationale of this revision of SAE J2360 is to transfer the technical requirements from PD4000 Rev N into SAE J2360, thereby maintaining the scope of both documents as SAE J2360 is a technical standard of requirements, and PD4000’s intent is a procedural document. The following summarized changes include: Tables 1 and 2 were created based on information from both documents and include relevant language associated. Table 3 was updated to include flash points requirements for newly classified viscosity grades: 62W-XX, 63W-XX, 64W-XX, and 65W-XX. Table 4 was created by combining the various paragraphs previously contained within this standard for simplification and clarification. And Section 4 was created by moving pieces from various sections and previous appendix to make clear the military requirements.
