About This Item

These recommended practices provide general recommendations for designing and fabricating metallic tubes and tube assemblies for fluid power applications utilizing commonly available manufacturing methods and general guidelines for tube selection and application. These recommended practices for designing and fabricating metallic tubes and tube assemblies for fluid power applications have been well accepted by the hydraulic industry in the USA since the release to publication in December 2001. The following changes and additional information have been accomplished as part of the SAE five year review process, to bring this document up to date with current industry technology and provide additional comprehensive application information requested by the users. Hard metric tubing information concerning size and current material selections has been added. The eventuality of the USA converting to hard metric tube sizes is highly recommended by SAE and its membership. Please note the changes as follows: a Added Rationale and statement concerning metric tubing b Enhanced safety considerations note as shown c Revised Scope d Updated Applicable Publications and Related Publications e In 4.2 added current standards take precedence statement f In 4.2.1 updated verbiage and added Tables 1 and 2 Typical Applications of Metric and Inch Carbon and Alloy Steel Tubing g Added 4.2.2 End Connector Joining Methods and reference see Table 2 h In 4.2.3 Tube Connection Selection added information concerning system temperature, compatibility of fluids, preferred usage of elastomeric seals, reference to SAE J2593 for installation guidance, assembly sequence and tightening torque values i In 4.4.6 updated verbiage and added hose info about routing between fixed points j 4.4.7 Removed tightening sequence information, added reference to SAE J2593 k 5.4 Changed and added Tube Dimensional descriptions l 5.5 Changed descriptions and text of Types of Inspection, added Optical Inspection m In 6.1.3 Maximum Bend Angle updated verbiage and added Figure 11 Typical Tube Design Concept to Avoid 180° Bends n In 6.3 Recommended Clamp Lengths updated verbiage o In 6.3.1 Recommended End Clamp Length for Bending and End Cold Forming added information concerning special circumstances for short straights on both ends of a tube assembly p In 6.3.2 Recommended Straight Lengths Between Bends updated verbiage q Added 6.3.4 recommending the use of one common bend radii throughout all of the bends of a tube assembly r In 6.7 added some tube marking information s In 7 added info about ISO 4406 cleanliness t In 7.4 added Workmanship information u Added 7.4.1 Plating information v In 7.5 added demagnification information
