About This Item

This SAE standard provides test procedures, performance requirements, design guidelines and installation guidelines for full adaptive forward lighting systems (AFS). This document represents the SAE equivalent of ECE R123 “Uniform provisions concerning the approval of adaptive front-lighting systems (AFS) for motor vehicles”. This standard is based on ECE regulation 123 (R123). This document translates R123 into the SAE standard format and adds existing SAE J575 and SAE J1383 testing requirements. All of the lamp requirements from ECE R123 are contained in this document, although they have been reorganized to follow the SAE standard guidelines. No new requirements have been added beyond what is already contained in ECE R123, SAE J575, or in SAE J1383. Additional information was added where clarification was needed due to unique attributes of AFS. Requirements concerning Adaptive Driving Beam are not included in this standard at this time, but will likely be added at a later date.
