About This Item

This document provides an assessment of current engineering test and simulation standards and methods used to determine the fuel efficiency, freight efficiency and emissions of single-vehicle systems comprised primarily of on-road trucks and buses with GVWR of more than 10000 pounds (4535 kg). This document provides guidance on the applicability and use of each test and simulation standard, method and technology discussed for multi-vehicle systems. Automated vehicles are being developed as a means to provide safer and more efficient transportation services. These vehicle types can also be used in multi-vehicle platoons in automated driving. As the capabilities of these vehicle types differ from conventional vehicles, a need exists for standards to evaluate the operational characteristics of multi-vehicle systems. The focus of this document are on-road trucks and buses with GVWR of more than 10000 pounds (4535 kg). To support and guide the development of new standards relevant to these vehicle system types, a review and assessment of relevant isolated-vehicle standards and relevant technology areas are required.
