About This Item

This standard will apply primarily to the vehicle classes identified in SAE J3194. It provides a schema for utilizing alphanumeric values to represent identifying information such as the manufacturer or vehicle provider, year of manufacture, model, vehicle type, weight, width, speed, and power source. Although conceptually similar to a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), this standard does not classify or intend to suggest classification of these vehicles as motor vehicles for regulatory or safety data purposes. The location for placement of these identifiers on the vehicle, type of label, permanence, and visibility are out of scope for this document. This standard is intended to provide a means of identification of Powered Micromobility Vehicle classes and characteristics through use of an alphanumeric identifier. The intent is to promote uniformity and comparability in safety data by providing a means of standard identification of these vehicles and their characteristics. This standard will aid in accurate crash and injury data collection (e.g., Emergency Medical Services [EMS], Law Enforcement) and support vehicle identification for safety research and analysis. This standard would differentiate the classes and any sub-classes (e.g., powered bicycle classes). The schema presented in this standard utilizes the long-established Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) assigned by motor vehicle manufacturers as a model. A similar method has been used by manufacturers of off-road recreation vehicles to assign an alpha-numeric Product Identification Number (PIN) to facilitate standard identification. The VIN and PIN schemas are used to promote accurate identification in safety data as well as by the manufacturers and other stakeholders.
