About This Item

This document applies to the requirements of a device used in the field and inspection stations to aim and check aim of mechanically aimable headlamp units. The purpose of this document is to provide a laboratory test procedure to determine whether the devices under test are capable of accurately positioning headlamp units using their aiming pads or aiming/seating plane and maintaining their accuracy in service within the tolerances designated in this document. SAE J602 is the standard used for mechanical aimed headlamps and has not changed for many years. All current mechanical aim headlamps designs allowed by FMVSS 108 are referenced in this standard document. The changes made to this document cover more specifically the aim of type "F" headlamps that are allowed by FMVSS-108 by referring to the aiming/setting plane or ring where appropriate. References in the standard pertaining to this document and SAE J599 were corrected. Metric dimensions were listed first followed by English units in parenthesis if necessary. Some editorial changes were also made.
