What is the Purpose of ASQ?
The American Society for Quality (ASQ) has been at the forefront of the quality movement for more than 70 years. ASQ traces its beginnings to the end of World War II, when manufacturers sought to maintain many of the quality improvement techniques used during wartime. ASQ has also played a pivotal role in maintaining these legacy standards while also promoting continued innovation in the quality field.
In the late 1970s, quality principles greatly influenced manufacturing and other industrial processes by focusing attention on how products and services could define and meet specifications. Businesses often established a Quality Control department to ensure that specifications were met. In the 1980s, ASQ began to see how quality could be applied beyond the world of manufacturing. Today, manufacturing remains ASQ’s primary activity, but ASQ has also established itself as a champion of quality in education, healthcare, the service sector, and government.
This professional organization advances learning, quality improvement, and knowledge exchange to improve business results and create better workplaces and communities worldwide. ASQ officers and member experts are available to provide information and advice to the U.S. Congress, government agencies, state legislatures, and other groups and individuals on quality in the federal government, including education, health care quality, training, transportation safety, quality management, licensing of quality professionals, and more.
