What is the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)?

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Codes and Standards contribute to efficiency and consistency in the design and construction of public works and facilities. These standards govern the design and maintenance of public works such as roads, bridges, water and power systems, as well as public facilities such as ports, railroads, and airports.

What is the Purpose of ASCE?

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2002. When twelve founders gathered at the Croton Aqueduct in New York City on November 5, 1852, to found the American Society of Civil Engineers and Architects, they laid the foundation for an institution that has proven to be one of the most distinguished engineering societies in the world.

Civil engineers build the world’s infrastructure. In the 19th century, civil engineers built the transcontinental railroad system that connected the United States from coast to coast. Change continued to accelerate throughout the 20th century as civil engineers created the Interstate Highway System and safe drinking water systems. Today, ASCE is a worldwide leader for excellence in civil engineering.

The ASCE Codes and Standards Program develops consensus standards on a variety of topics for the civil engineering profession. Standards committees are grouped within one of ASCE’s seven institutes according to their general subject areas.

  • Architectural Engineering Institute
  • Construction Institute
  • Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute
  • Environmental and Water Resources Institute
  • Geo-Institute
  • Structural Engineering Institute
  • Transportation and Development Institute

ASCE standards are used by agricultural, civil, marine and highway engineers, architects and others in industry and government to determine quality control and maintenance in the design/construction field.

How to Use ASCE Standards

ASCE standards enable you to:

  • Simplify design processes
  • Ensuring accuracy
  • Minimize errors and risk

Keep in Mind!

Promote safety, reliability, productivity and efficiency in all areas of civil engineering
