What are American Welding Society (AWS) Standards?

The American Welding Society (AWS) writes more than 350 standards for welding practices and procedures for construction and aerospace, covering structural steel, sheet steel, and aluminum. This includes one of the world’s most widely referenced codes, D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel. The collection also includes welding inspector certification guidelines.

What is the Purpose of AWS?

AWS was founded in 1919 to advance the science, technology, and processes of welding and joining, brazing, soldering, cutting, and thermal spraying. AWS continues to lead the way in supporting welding education and technology development from the factory floor to high-rise construction, from military weapons to household products.

Engineers, scientists, researchers, welders, detailers, fabricators, assemblers, automatic, semi-automatic and manual welding as well as brazing, soldering, ceramics, laminating, robotics and welding safety and health, reference AWS standards.

AWS standards are used in design, manufacturing, testing, quality assurance, and related functions in the automotive, shipbuilding, design/build, and heavy construction industries.
